How to clean your bins

If there is a bad smell coming from your bins or recycling bins, you will probably think it’s the bins contents, but its important to take a good look at the cleanliness of your bins and recycling bins. Over time any household bin or recycling bin will become dirty and will start to attract germs and smells nearly as bad as the waste products you put into the bins.

Its important to thoroughly clean your bins and recycling bins on a regular basis. Some people clean their bins or recycle bins on a weekly basis, others prefer to clean their bins on a monthly basis. It is however important to follow a regular and frequent bin cleaning schedule as this will cut down on bacteria growth in your bins and also helps reduce bad odours. Frequently cleaning of your bins will also help to stop attracting rodents and other wildlife.

When you decide to clean your bins and recycle bins it best to make sure you have the correct equipment beforehand, the best bin cleaning kit would comprise of rubber gloves, water source, detergent, long handled scrub brush and spray disinfectant.

How to clean your bins and recycling bins

• Dump your bin upside down and empty it of as much debris as possible. Use a broom to sweep out any bits of garbage that are stubbornly hanging on to the inside of the bin.
• Wash the bin with water and detergent. If your bin is large, do this outside with a hose and a long-handled scrub brush. Rinse with the hose, and turn the bin upside down in order to let all the water drain out of it.
• Turn the bin back around so that it is right-side up, and let it dry completely in the sunshine.
• Spray the inside of the bin thoroughly with a disinfectant. Choose one that kills germs and will also neutralise any remaining odours.
